Empowering LGBTQ+ in Montana with EmpowerMT

Eleven years ago, EmpowerMT’s youth leaders helped pass Missoula’s Non-Discrimination Ordinance and decided that the victory needed a city-wide celebration to recognize all that makes the Garden City beautiful and unique. This celebration is known as Diversity Day. The leaders of this expanded Non-Discrimination Ordinance that offered protections for sexual and gender identity were EmpowerMT's LGBTQ+ youth leaders.

But these youth didn't stop there. They worked with EmpowerMT to create a weekly support group for LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit Youth in Missoula. This support group has provided a necessary space for LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit to connect and collectively organize for the past eleven years. This LGBTQ+ and Gender Justice Activism is needed now more than ever as Montana is currently facing a blatantly anti-LGBTQ+ particularly anti-trans state legislature that has been hatefully pressing discriminatory and harmful legislation. Efforts to stop this legislation is more important than ever considering Montana is without an LGBTQ+ ally in the governors office for the first time in 16 years that could veto this vicious attempts to hurt LGBTQ+ Montanans.
