Our Story

Translate Gender is a trans-led community organization founded in 2006 to serve trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth and their families, helping them build community, resilience, and joy. We provide clinical services to support mental health, peer groups for families, training and advocacy for k-12 schools, and arts programming to ensure trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth can flourish in Western Massachusetts.

Translate Gender’s work is rooted in serving trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth and their families and we believe it is essential that our staff and board is reflective of the communities we serve. We primarily connect with youth and families in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire counties, but regularly have people join our events from all across Massachusetts.

After 15 years operating as a volunteer effort, we incorporated as a 501c3 in 2021 to strengthen and expand our programs.

Some Recent Highlights

  • Our Youth & Family Gatherings currently serve more than 100 people each month directly through our in-person groups in Hampshire and Berkshire counties.
  • Our Gender Affirming Clinical Services serves about 20 clients and we are growing our client base. We support a mix of youth, young adults, and families seeking counseling services, space to explore their gender, and build networks of support and care.
  • Our brand new Open Studios Drop-In for Tweens & Teens has been an incredible hit, welcoming in trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth to create, hangout, build community, and have fun on 1st & 3rd Fridays of the month!
  • We also offer a number of special events throughout the year, including our Trans Day of Visibility Resource & Art Fair, which had more than 650 attendees, 30+ community based organizations, and 15 queer, trans, and BIPOC artists sharing their work.

Why Give

Much of our work is sustained by generous contributions of time and money from our community. We are working hard to create a sustainable future for our organization, which means building infrastructure for our team to grow - i.e. being compensated and supported in their positions with a thriving wage and benefits; being able to pay general operating expenses including rent / utilities / supply expenses; bolstering our programming for trans youth and their families; and expanding our gender affirming clinical services and training initiatives across Western Massachusetts.

We hope you are just as excited as we are in this venture. We need your support to make this happen!
